[Conner was part Kryptonian which meant that unlike someone who was completely human, he could go without sleep for longer without any aid. Unlike someone like Superman though, he does need sleep. He's been managing to keep up a decent fight against these things, but he has been using his powers and that's burning through his energy reserves which were pretty low to begin with. He was tired and if he kept going at this rate he would either become ill or basically die.
But why worry about that just now? He had the energy still and there was so many of these things, there were so many civilians that he couldn't just sit back and do nothing.
