OPEN;

who. York and YOU!
what. for anyone who wants to talk to, see, or run into York since her injury
where. anywhere in Zeta District -- The Quad, York and Wash's apartment, somewhere in the markets, etc
when. anytime this week!
warnings. probably lots of feelings :(

It hasn't been a good week for York. It's the understatement of the century, really. The mission on Saturday with Garrus and North had gone so fantastically awful, she's still reeling from it a little. It's too fresh in her mind, still, even the admittedly blurry memory of the incendiary grenade going off in her face. Garrus and North had had to drag her out of there to the clinic, and she'd lost a good day to emergency surgery and recovery. And in the end, they'd botched the job. Nobody had even gotten paid.

Mordin had done his best, and honestly, considering the limited resources, he did a pretty damn good job. Especilaly for an alien. She wouldn't have figured a salarian could fix up a human face this nice. No, nice isn't the word for it. It doesn't look even close to nice. The wound is healing, but it's still fresh, an ugly red swath of skin around her left eye, pulling down her cheek. Even when it's bandaged, it's impossible to hide the way the damaged skin pulls unnaturally tight around her eye. And she can't hide the eye itself. Even once the skin heals -- if it even heals all the way -- her eye will still be that awful, milky white. She'll be lucky to get it back to fifty percent functionality, at this point. Last time this'd happened, she'd had UNSC medical facilities available to her; better equipment, more staff, more resources. Last time.

York's starting to feel like the butt of some cosmic joke.

It's bad enough to have a job go so fantastically wrong like this one did, to have her ass land in the hospital with such a severe injury. To have it become something permanently debilitating, to have to wear it like she does. It's bad enough that it hurts. But it's even worse that this has happened before.

The similarities are too eerie, so much they make her feel a little sick. She'd gotten the eye fixed back on Sacrosanct because she didn't want to be a liability. She wanted to be able to watch her own back, and without Delta, she couldn't do that, not with a busted eye. And now she's right back where she started -- worse, even -- and this time, she doesn't even have somebody else's Delta to understand. Maybe six months with a new eye and she'd gotten used to it. She'd gotten used to looking in the mirror and seeing the perfect symmetry of her face, to smoothing her hand over her left cheek and feeling only smooth, soft skin. She'd just gotten used to the delightful ease with which she could read and focus and see, with no headaches, no strain. She'd only just gotten comfortable with it. And what -- that's it? That's all she gets? Well, joke's on her for ever thinking things might be easy, for once.

But there's nothing York can do. She doesn't have Delta to help her compensate and Mordin's got the best care she can receive on the station on her paycheck. So York does what she does best -- she keeps moving forward, making like nothing's happened, because what's she gonna say, anyway? She goes back to work at The Quad as soon as she's able, because she can only stand to be laid up for so long and it's just her face, it's not like she can't walk, and her boss comments on her face in a way that's maybe supposed to be funny, but maybe she doesn't get krogan humor. She keeps going about her business, just like before, and she doesn't look in mirrors much anymore these days, but at least she's still moving.

"Yeah, sure. Or maybe this is bigger than some drunk being pissed that you cut them off after one too many. Now all they know is that one grenade isn't enough to put you down."

Marco's entire life has been one continuous stupid action movie plot for the past few months as far as he's concerned, but between the sketchy bullshit he's been a part of, his innate ability to suspect absolutely everything, and the tension he knows is ever growing on the station, he knows it has to be justified somehow. Life couldn't just be this weird and coincidental all the time.

"But speaking of drunks, come on, York, throw me a bone here, I've had a shitty couple of weeks."

"Yeah, my second time being trapped here and the first time wasn't fun either." Pax replied with a dull sigh. She hated Omega, it was a hole, but she was trying to make the best of a crappy situation in the long run. At the very least she was glad that she wasn't the only one trapped on the rock, it seemed plenty of people would've rather been anywhere in the galaxy than here.

"Yeah. I bet." She sighs, worries at her bottom lip. She kind of hates that she wants to say something about, you know, the situation, and yet doesn't really know how. When the fuck did she start caring?

"Look, you've probably heard it from someone else before? But whatever. It's good you're still around. We just have to stick together when shit goes down. Right?"

.... That could have come out a lot better. But whatever, it's out now! And just to keep her expression from showing how aggravated she is by her ridiculous word-failure, she takes that shot.

And good lord does that shot pack a hit! She can't keep from wrinkling her nose a bit and pulling a face like she just snorted rubbing alcohol.

Despite the fact that everything is probably way bigger than Marco could even imagine at this point, Marco can't help but make his immediate environment as dramatic-seeming as possible. Part of it is because he needs to be loud, but planning for and expecting the worst possible scenario is a legitimate survival tactic of his. It's kept him in one piece so far.

"Come on, don't tell me there's a drinking age on this rock. What is this, America? Old enough to die for my country, too young to drink? If I can buy guns, I can totally buy booze."

"I should know better, now, than to listen to you. Because it always ends in you getting hurt."

He's saying this, really, more in terms of watching his York get hurt on the training room floor, but he doesn't need to say that out loud. It doesn't matter, anyway. He hadn't been able to help him, then, and he hadn't been able to help her this time.

There's a small wince for her tone, and for the fact that he already knows it isn't going to give her the use of her eye back, which does mean that he shouldn't remain being so torn up about it. "Look, I know nothing is going to let me go back and change it, but I can't help how I feel about it. That's just how it is."

"Mm-hmm." Wash shakes his head and brushes his fingers over her forehead again. He doesn't expect to get through to her much when she's like this, but so long as he can keep her from doing too much, he'll be satisfied. The last thing he needs is for her to strain herself. "How about you stay right here for now, huh? You can shower in a little while."

"Hey, I'm not getting in your way." Wash shakes his head and reaches to tug the blanket up and over her, tucking it around her. He pauses over her a moment, as if considering something, and then draws back, settling for stroking over her forehead again. "Shh. Just get some rest, okay?"

South likes to think of her unpredictability as an advantage, so she'll always take it as a compliment. She's also more than aware of how different things are around here. It's weird what a complete change of scenery, responsibility and type of high-stress (because it's sure as hell high-stress, just not like back home) can do to anyone involved.

But that's yet another thing she doesn't like to actively think about. Too broody, or some shit like that.

"Better not," South mutters in response, though the corner of her mouth is still tilted just the slightest bit upward. She winces yet again, wondering just how long of an after-burn this shit has, and then scowls at the shot glass like it's personally offended her.

"Kinda hard to take a whole shot like that at once and take it easy," she admits, but she'd be lying if she said she wasn't amused. She wanted a challenge, and she sure as hell got it. "So tell me again what the hell that was? Exactly?"

"Just have to make the best of it until we either get killed or find a way home." Pax knew that as it was they were screwed, there was no question about it. But she wasn't going to tell a visitor just how bad the situation was, she didn't need to make people randomly panic.

"Even though I'm from this universe doesn't mean I want to be stuck here during the Reaper invasion."

"Reapers, are massive, sentient spaceships and their entire goal is to wipe out all advanced organic life. Outside of that you'll have to ask one of the Normandy crew for more details." She then pointed one long finger at her, "But you didn't hear that from me."

"That's the thing, what the best strategy to win a war? Make sure one side has no information about you. The reapers were very careful of that with other societies, wiping out all traces of their existence from record. So, when we came along, we'd be taken by surprise and be defenceless."

Even Pax admitted it was a good tactic. Terrifying that it was being used against all organic life but she could see the effort that went into harvesting the galaxy every 50 000 years or so.

"To be fair we didn't know anything about them until about a year ago, and then suddenly they're on our doorstep and mass murdering colonies, turning any body they can find into a slave for them and we're scrambling to find a solution."

Wash shakes his head with a quiet chuckle to himself, but he moves her feet at the end of the couch, pushing them so she's curled up a little more. He tucks the end of the blanket up over his lap and reaches to squeeze her shoulder, giving her a half-smile. "There. Happy?"

Wash reaches up to stroke over her forehead, affectionate, and smiles as she finally settles down. Recuperating will be rough on her, he knows, but... she'll pull through. She always does. And he'll be here for her every step of the way.

Wash settles back into the couch and finally lets himself relax.
