He knew it couldn't have been that easy. To simply say I'm sorry and let that be it, because it was never that easy with the two of them.

North was at a loss for what to do, anything to do to make her not angry with him anymore, and just because he was standing there being sorry didn't make up for anything. He knew that, knew that she knew that, too.
